Top 20 Male-Dominated Jobs

Thanks to Bizwomen’s fantastic and newly released analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, we can see which job positions go mostly to men or women.  In the top 20 male-dominated jobs, we see some quite intuitive results (i.e. few women are truck drivers, police officers or manual laborers) but also some quite surprising, relative ones.  For example, women are better represented as CEOs than in the kitchen (as chefs)!  And there are proportionately more female butchers and janitors than financial advisors and software developers.

Top 20 Male-Dominated Jobs (and % women)

  1. Drivers/sales workers and truck drivers (4.1%)
  2. Police and sheriff / patrol officers (13.0%)
  3. Miscellaneous agricultural workers (13.8%)
  4. Engineering technicians, except drafters (16.3%)
  5. Laborers, and freight, stock and material movers, hand (17.3%)
  6. First-line supervisors of production and operating workers (18.5%)
  7. Security guards and gaming surveillance officers (19.5%)
  8. Chefs and head cooks (19.7%)
  9. Software developers, applications and systems hardware (19.8%)
  10. Metal workers and plastics workers, all other (20.4%)
  11. Computer occupations, all other (22.6%)
  12. Sales representatives, wholesale and manufacturing (22.8%)
  13. Transportation, store and distribution managers (23.0%)
  14. Computer programmers (24.2%)
  15. Personal financial advisors (25.1%)
  16. Butchers and other meat, poultry and fish processing workers (25.7%)
  17. General and operations managers (26.4%)
  18. Chief executives (27.2%)
  19. Production workers, all others (27.3%)
  20. Janitors and building cleaners (27.4%)
